The Congress of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS), Anchorage, Alaska, 2011

On September 14–18th, 2011 the 19th Congress of the International society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) was held in the capital of Alaska, in Anchorage. At the Congress, Georgia was represented by the “Talizi” delegation on behalf of its director, Akaki Tsilosani and the manager of the training program Salome Vadachkoria. The 450 delegates represented at the Congress had the opportunity to hear more than 150 reports devoted to the pressing questions of modern transplantology of hair during the four day program.

The presentation of Akaki Tsilosani was devoted to the analysis of the six-year practice results of large-scale hair transplant surgeries – giga sessions. Colleagues-transplantologists have been especially interested in how it is possible for the collective of Talizi to conduct giga sessions within 4–5 hours and how they could solve so a crucial of  an issue, as low elasticity of a scalp during the process of large scale transplantations.

Two years they were also in Amsterdam and during this session, the presentation module was dedicated to the giga sessions, and Akaki Tsilosani, together with Sharon Keene from the USA, Jerry Wong from Canada and Arthur Tykocinski from Brazil, the pioneers of carrying out these giga sessions, were addressed at a meeting. It would be desirable to note that the management of International society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) has handed to Jerry Wong “The Golden follicle 2011”, in acknowledgement of his long-term research and introduction of the practice of giga sessions to carry out hair transplantology by Jerry Wong and his partner Victor Hasson.

The first meeting of Akaki Tsilosani and Jerry Wong took place at the ISHRS congress in Montreal, in 2008. Further meetings on various scientific symposiums have allowed this acquaintance to grow into a close friendly relationship. This rapprochement promoted as well the fact that both clinics over which Wong and Tsilosani administered, specialized in large scale transplantations, so they indeed have a lot in common with each other.

“The day when we were able to transplant 2,000 grafts, we considered as the day off,” - often jokes Jerry Wong. In Talizi Clinic such surgeries were also considered as minimal for a long time.

Besides the presentation of Akaki Tsilosani, there the work of Talizi surgeons’ assistants was also presented. The manager of training programs, Salome Vadachkorija, took an active part in the workshops together with surgeons’ assistants from leading world clinics. She demonstrated the preparation methods of grafts for interested students and skilled assistants.

The presentation of the first robotized system for a hair transplant created and presented by the company ARTAS was the main intrigue of the Congress in Alaska. The robot has been designed with the assistance of the known American surgeon-transplantologist of hair Jim Harris, and caused genuine interest in all present. After a demonstration of his work, it became clear that the company ARTAS robot carries out only a small part of the most complicated procedure on hair transplantations, namely capture and transsection of the follicular units noted by the surgeon on the monitor. It is possible to unequivocally summarize that the shown device is just the first step of a way of creating this high-grade device.

On the Congress, Talizi Clinic and chief executive of the ISHRS Victoria Ceh had reached the preliminary agreement on carrying out of the regional congress of International society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) in Georgia, in 2013.

And what about the next session of the 20th annual congress of ISHRS? It will take place on October 17-21th, 2012 in the Bahamas.
